2. Choosing the right technology

From the many technologies available, select those that meet the required electrical power needs and are compatible with the available fuels. Let’s take a look at these different technologies.

2.1 Gas engines (gasoline or diesel)

  • Principle: combustion of natural gas, biogas, or fuel oil in an engine.

  • Applications: buildings (hospitals, shopping centers), small-scale industrial facilities.

  • Capacity: 0.1 to 10 MWe.

  • Advantages: high electrical efficiency (35–45%), quick startup.

  • Disadvantages: high maintenance requirements, noise and vibration.
