3. Identify and apply the relevant criteria for selecting an appropriate technology

3.1 Evaluate the power-to-heat ratio (P/H) and select the appropriate P/H value for the identified applications

  • Gas engine: relatively high, because it produces more electricity per unit of heat.

  • Gas turbine: lower, because there is more heat in the exhaust gases.

  • Combined cycle: intermediate, as it uses heat to generate more electricity (but here we are considering cogeneration, so only part of the heat is used).

  • Microturbine: similar to turbines, but smaller, and therefore with a lower efficiency.

  • Fuel cell: may vary depending on the type (SOFC, MCFC, PEMFC), but generally has a high efficiency.
