1.1 What types of cogeneration systems should you choose?

Cogeneration can be implemented on various scales.

  • Micro-cogeneration: Designed for residential use or small buildings, it uses Stirling engines or fuel cells and typically runs on natural gas or biogas. It covers a significant portion of a residential home’s electricity and heating needs.

  • Industrial or district cogeneration: on a large scale, this involves units capable of supplying neighborhoods, hospitals, or industrial sites. The principle relies on burning fuel to produce steam or hot gas, which drives a turbine to generate electricity, while the waste heat is recovered for heating or industrial processes.
