 INTRODUCTION

Insulation involves wrapping pipes and equipment carrying or storing fluids (heating, domestic hot water, steam, chilled water) with suitable insulating materials. This operation aims to :

  • reduce heat loss and thus energy consumption;

  • avoid condensation on cold or chilled water systems;

  • maintain fluid setpoint temperatures;

  • protect installations against thermal and mechanical shock;

  • comply with regulatory requirements in terms of energy efficiency and fire safety.

The sectors concerned include building (tertiary, residential, industrial), heating networks, steam production and distribution facilities, etc.

This fact sheet will help you to identify the main insulating materials in use, how to install them, how to assess the heat loss associated with insulation, and what the regulatory requirements are.
