ABSTRACT
It is the visual system, the eye and the brain, impressed and informed by light, which allows for the perception of space. This article deals with visual performances and provides recommendations linked to visual hygiene. Relative luminances, references and notion of white and lights are introduced. General considerations on the choice of colors as well as on lights and shadows are also provided. The equilibrium between performance, hygiene and comfort is difficult to assess as it greatly differs according to individuals. Examples of indirect influences on the experience of visual ambience conclude this article.

INTRODUCTION
It is necessary to limit the scope of the concepts we are about to present, even if they are essentially valid in the majority of cases and, in any case, can always serve as a basis for reflection.
Although studies and experience have led to the adoption of rules, these are only valid when the aim is to protect and/or satisfy the majority of individuals in a group. They are therefore particularly well-suited to industrial and commercial premises, and more generally to premises intended for groups of varying numbers of individuals.
In the case of single-family homes, while the conditions for visual performance and the recommendations for visual hygiene remain valid on average, the sensation of pleasure or optimal situation may differ completely from one individual to another. Thus, a particular individual may define a visual strategy that would be considered unacceptable to a group because it contradicts, for example, the rules of visual hygiene.
