7.1 Construction products regulations
With the signing of the Treaty of Rome in 1957, the future member states of the European Union established the principle of free movement of people and goods within Europe. While this principle is fairly straightforward to implement for everyday consumer goods and people, it is quite different for works contracts. The same cannot be said for works contracts.
Indeed, each member country had its own calculation code, which made it very difficult for a French company to respond to a German invitation to tender, for example: the design office simply didn't know how to dimension the structure in the country in question.
This is why, in 1989, the Council of Europe passed a Construction Product Directive...
