Overview
ABSTRACT
Scaffolding is a structure which combines vertical and horizontal elements with bracing elements for stability. Assembled by fittings, scaffolding allows for rapid and simplified assembly, disassembly and storage in order to be reused for various purposes. Due to the limited number of construction elements, a large number of varied structures can be assembled. After a brief overview of general information, this article deals with the destinations of scaffolding (service, shoring, temporary structures). To conclude, an exhaustive list of terms and definitions within the regulatory framework is provided.

INTRODUCTION
The aim of this series of files is to provide engineers, in design offices and on construction sites, with general information on scaffolding equipment to help them use it, whether for service scaffolding or shoring, as an auxiliary to construction, or for other temporary purposes.
It is also intended to provide them with the means to facilitate exchanges of views with suppliers of these materials, as well as with testing institutes, in order to bring the work undertaken by users to a successful conclusion.
These various parts replace the 1996 dossier, taking into account the current state of European standardization. The European Committee for Standardization (CEN) has been working for a number of years in one of its technical committees (TC 53) to unify national standards for service and shoring scaffolding, resulting in European standards to replace national standards. Other standards are still at the development stage (see
The "Scaffolding" theme is broken down as follows:
[C 125v2] Destinations and regulatory framework ;
Generally speaking, scaffolding is a reticulated structure made up of vertical elements (posts), horizontal elements (beams, crossbeams) and bracing elements to ensure stability. These elements are joined together by interlocking or keyed connections. Accessories are also included, such as ground support parts, or load-bearing parts at the top of the posts (forks).
Scaffolding equipment enables the required structures to be erected, then dismantled and used for many other purposes.
