 INTRODUCTION

A good understanding of the physical and chemical properties of fluids in general means that we can define very precisely the characteristics of drinking water [TBA 2 510] , as well as those of any fluid likely to be transported or stored: food fluids, rainwater, heat transfer fluids (sanitary and heating water) and medical fluids (nitrogen, oxygen, compressed air, etc.).

The same approach applies to the materials used to transport these widely differing fluids. The mechanical and physical qualities and defects of these metals and alloys, cements and plastic materials are crucial to the safe and sanitary application of fluid technology, as well as to the longevity of the structures, not to mention the economic constraints of the market. Electrical conductivity, rigidity and corrosion resistance are all parameters to be taken into account, as are operating pressure and pipe dimensions.

Another aspect not to be overlooked is the need to ensure that these pipes or other tanks are watertight, using jointing products adapted to their intended use.
