5. Hydraulic alternator and compensator protection

Hydraulic turbine-driven alternators and synchronous compensators are essentially the same as turbo-alternators, apart from their rotational speed. The faults that can occur in these two classes of machine are therefore of a similar nature.

In general, the only differences are the relay action threshold settings, which are specific to the machine's operation on the network. The consistency of a protection system can also vary according to the power of the group and its importance in relation to the network.
