8.1 Protection relays and recent developments

The design and implementation of protection systems must take into account a number of criteria that contribute to satisfying the requirements of users and the energy distributor: quality and continuity of supply.

A good protection system must be :

• reliable and available;

• selective to isolate only the faulty part of the network, without disturbing the healthy part;
