Overview

ABSTRACT

Electrical networks represent a considerable part of the investments made by managers. Constantly subjected to natural aggressions such as lightning strikes for instance, these network can undergo perturbations. In this case, the quality of the service provided and the longevity of the material are evidently impacted. The aim of protection is thus to rapidly identify any fault or anomalous situation that could damage the network and set up a preventive or corrective action. This article deals with the protection of transformers and busbars (bearing in mind the fact that an electrical network also includes other elements such as power lines or cables). The principles of protection and relays more specifically adapted to these elements are thus detailed, as well as the advantages of digital techniques for protection systems.

 INTRODUCTION

This dossier is part of a series on "Protection of transmission and distribution networks":

  • " Presentation " [D 4 800v2] ;

  • "Short-circuit and insulation fault protection" [D 4 801] ;

  • "Line and cable protection" [D 4 802] ;

  • "Protection of busbars and transformers [D 4 803] ;

  • "Protection systems and plans" [D 4 804] .

In the [D 4 801] file "Protection of transmission and distribution networks against short-circuits and insulation faults", the following points were addressed:

  • the performance and constraints imposed on protection systems by different types of network;

  • presentation of the internationally accepted classification of protection ;

  • a reminder of the influence of transients on protection behavior.
