The incidence of fires involving lithium-ion batteries has been growing rapidly since 2018, correlating with the increase in the number of electric vehicles and stationary energy storage systems (BESS).
Fires involving lithium-ion batteries are increasing significantly, particularly in the light mobility, domestic applications, and stationary storage systems sectors. In New York, the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) reported 268 battery-related fires in 2023, causing 18 deaths, compared to 104 fires and 4 deaths in 2021
