2.1 Types of batteries by chemistry

Modern batteries differ in terms of their chemistry, architecture, and use. These factors directly influence their behavior in the event of overheating or internal failure. Lithium-ion batteries are available in several common chemistries, as shown in the table at 1 . The acronyms for the main lithium-ion chemistries are defined as follows:

  • LCO (lithium cobalt oxide): lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO 2 );

  • NMC (nickel manganese cobalt oxide): nickel-manganese-cobalt oxide (LiNiMnCoO 2 );
