1.1 Area covered

Electromagnetic compatibility is the ability of a device, apparatus or system to function satisfactorily in its electromagnetic environment, without itself producing intolerable disturbances for any other equipment in its environment.

It is therefore important to define precisely what equipment is in relation to the rest of the system, which is then considered to be the equipment's environment. In the development of complex systems, this definition is not always trivial, and can have a major impact on the design of the element under consideration.
