The extension to the IEEE 802.11 standard published by the 802.11e working group in 2005 enables fine-grained service differentiation in wireless networks administered by an access point. Several parameters of the medium access protocol can be set to prioritize one class of traffic over another, or one station over another.

While this work does not solve the fundamental problems of end-to-end QoS, it does enable certain applications to be favored at the local network level, since QoS support in the global network is less necessary due to the over-dimensioning of core networks.

An exhaustive list of WMM-certified equipment is available on the Wi-Fi Alliance website.

It's worth noting that support for quality-of-service extensions is now commonplace.
