1.1 Architecture

It's worth recalling that, over the years, a number of solutions have been proposed by market suppliers, representing major developments in storage systems (see 1 ). Starting with DAS systems (Direct Attached Storage, passive peripherals), architects have successively designed intelligent systems (data sharing via a controller), a dedicated file service (NAS appliance for Network Attached Storage ), then networking (functional richness of the SAN, Storage Area Network ), before today proposing virtualization (i.e. a logical vision of storage).
