3. Choice of equipment

The development of an embedded Linux project generally corresponds to one of two situations:

  • porting the system to embedded Linux, while retaining the ;

  • the creation of a new product, including the choice or creation of materials.

The first case can be critical, as existing hardware must be compatible with the Linux kernel. If you're using at least a 32-bit processor, it's highly likely that the processor core is already supported by the Linux kernel (ARM, x86, PowerPC and, more rarely, MIPS). A total of 31 hardware architectures are currently supported by the standard Linux kernel.

On the other hand, it may happen, albeit rarely, that certain peripherals are not taken into account and that one or more drivers are required.
