11. Performance evaluation

As part of SMS implementation, all management system standards require control activities on the operation of a management system.

For the record, the principle of quality and continuous improvement is embodied in the form of a virtuous circle (known as the Deming wheel or PDCA). It is made up of four dials:

  • 1. plan – forecast – organize (Plan) ;

  • 2. implement (Do) ;

  • 3. Check –;

  • 4. improve (Act).

Note :

William Edwards Deming (1900-1993) was a mathematics researcher at the U.S. Department of Agriculture and a sampling expert at the U.S. Census Bureau. The Japanese Quality Award also bears his name.
