4. Remote procedure call implementation
The approaches to the effective realization of a remote procedure call presented here use programming interfaces at different levels: direct use of sockets, use of an IDL and stub generator (Sun's RPCgen), use of Java RMI.
4.1 Sending messages
Implementing a remote procedure call directly using sockets (communication ports associated with processes) is purely for educational purposes, to highlight the various elements of the call that are hidden when implemented with stub generators.
Depending on the desired mode of implementation (non-connected mode using the UDP protocol or connected mode using the TCP protocol), the server and client programs take one of the forms shown below.
