Overview

ABSTRACT

The principles of digital library system interoperability were initiated by early standardization efforts and harmonization, but with the advent of web technologies, they must now be revisited. Interoperability ensures the industrialization of metadata and widespread copy cataloguing, and allows integration of heterogeneous sources within the informational devices in the digital era. It combines the use of standards, formats and computer protocols to facilitate interaction between informational sources. This article gives a panorama of the different methods used to classify different protocols, and provide an overview of issues related to its implementation.

 INTRODUCTION

The interoperability of document information systems is part of the global issue of creating a single point of entry to information. This article proposes to demonstrate the general principles of interoperability, which are quite old, as well as their implementation in the documentary information system. The DIS encompasses a set of devices enabling the user to carry out a documentary or catalogical search on a set of heterogeneous sources and on a set of resources described in different formats. Each device is suited to a particular type of metadata, and can be distinguished by two main methods: "hot" interrogation of remote metadata, or retrieval of remote data and copying back into the local system.
