1. From cataloguing to metadata

Preamble

The word "Web" can be considered an integral part of the French language, so we'll use it in preference to the term "toile", chosen by Quebecers. The term "metadata" is used to designate all the information that can be associated with a real or virtual resource (literary or artistic work, image, film, Web page, etc.).

1.1 What is metadata?

The concept of metadata has evolved with the use of the Internet. Initially, metadata was limited to archival information, making it possible to find a work or document in a library or archive. Metadata can also be used for other purposes, such as finding out how a work can be used, or discovering what a resource actually contains.
