2. Organization of a PostScript system
Figure 2 schematically describes the components of a PostScript system. It distinguishes the language with its sub-parts, the graphics machinery, and their relationship to inputs and outputs.
2.1 Language
PostScript is a programming language derived both from the Forth language, from which it draws inspiration for its stack management mechanisms, and from Lisp, from which it draws inspiration for the management of procedures as data (a PostScript procedure is actually an array) and for the dynamic typing of this data. In Level 2, PostScript uses a "garbage collector", a memory management technique also borrowed from Lisp.
