4. Brine treatment

4.1 Carbonation process

CO 2 is dispersed as bubbles in the brine to mobilize some of the sodium as bicarbonate. This bicarbonate is crystallized and removed. The borax remaining in solution is then crystallized by cooling in vacuum crystallizers. At a later stage, the sodium sulfate remaining in solution in the brine is crystallized.
