2. Conduction in an electrolyte: a macroscopic approach

2.1 Transport: migration, diffusion, convection

Electrical conduction is always associated with the movement of charged species. When describing this phenomenon at the macroscopic level, we generally distinguish three types of transport, depending on the nature of the forces that cause the movement of charged species: convection, migration and diffusion. In the vast majority of media, these phenomena can be described as isotropic. In single-crystal solids, however, non-isotropic conduction characteristics may be involved, insofar as certain directions of material transport are preferential, while others are forbidden.
