Overview

ABSTRACT

Coloring supports allow for the modification of certain characteristics, in order to meet aesthetic, identification and security needs for instance. Two types of coloring matters are used: pigments and colorants. Their origin and preparation mode differ; Contrarily to colorants which are absorbed by the support and unite chemically to the molecules they color, pigments attach only to the surface of the object. This article details the properties and characteristics (mechanical, chemical, optical, etc.) of these two families of additives whilst distinguishing between pigments of organic origin and pigments of mineral origin.

 INTRODUCTION

By their very nature, polymers have little or no color. Coloration helps to highlight an object. It can also serve as a marker (to differentiate the density of flexible polyurethane foams, for example). Coloring can also be used to improve signage (roadworks, for example), and can also provide camouflage.

It must therefore satisfy a wide range of requirements:

  • aesthetics ;

  • techniques ;

  • safety ;

  • Locating ;

  • camouflage.

Coloration influences certain material characteristics (chemical resistance, light fastness, structural modification, etc.).
