Overview

ABSTRACT

A liquid colorant is composed of a binder, in which a discontinuous phase is dispersed, the pigments and possibly other additives. Contrarily to solid colorants, liquid variations provide the following advantages: rapid results, easier and less cumbersome storage, they are non-perishable as they are always reusable. This article describes the coloring method based upon liquid pigment dispersion; implementation, dosage of colorants and choice of pigments according to a large number of criteria (coloring properties, aptitude to be transformed, conservation of mechanical properties, etc.). In conclusion method applications are presented.

 INTRODUCTION

The following describes a coloring method based on liquid pigment dispersions. By liquid pigment dispersions we mean a stable suspension of a pigment or colorant in a binder compatible with the plastic material. This pigment preparation is introduced at the base of the hopper of the injection molding machine or extruder during processing.

This dossier supplements the general dossier [AM 3 234] "Colorants. Pigments" of this treatise, which focuses mainly on powder colorants, which are :

  • or directly incorporated (generally by thermoplastic producers) into polymers with their other additives;

  • added (by processors) to base material granules prior to processing, in the form of masterbatches or dry blends.
