3.1 Skin absorption: a complex phenomenon

The skin is a complex organ due to its organization and physicochemical characteristics. It is composed of three layers, which are, from the outer surface to the innermost layer: the epidermis, the dermis, and the hypodermis. The surface is composed of a multilayered, keratinized, differentiated epithelial lining, the outermost layer of which, called the stratum corneum, is dead and represents the final stage of differentiation. Its main role is to act as a barrier for the skin.
