3. Solid-fluid interactions

Due to their large specific surface area and the presence of interstitial space or even intragranular porosity, the interactions between a powder and fluids are different from those encountered with massive solids. The phenomena described in this paragraph play an important role in both processing and characterization techniques for split solids.

3.1 Adsorption/desorption

Any fluid, vapour or liquid in contact with the surface of a solid body partially binds to it. This binding of molecules to the solid surface, known as adsorption, is generally exothermic and reversible, while the opposite phenomenon, desorption, is endothermic.
