4. Natural preservatives

4.1 Definitions and production methods

Natural preservatives include essential oils, extracts and certain vegetable oils. They are all obtained from plant raw materials, but according to distinct, more or less technical and innovative processes that define the type of molecules extracted (volatile or non-volatile, for example), as well as the final galenic form (liquid, powder, paste...). Since many plants have antimicrobial activity, this activity is found in extracts, but the quantity of active ingredients is often lower. So, before considering optimal use in a finished product, it is often necessary to carry out enrichment steps, or even to isolate the active molecules. In addition, decoloration and the addition of a solid carrier (such as maltodextrin or silica) are often required...
