4. Conclusion

This review focuses on conductive polymers and the many ways in which their properties can be modified by doping. Some devices based on conducting polymers are in full technological maturity, while others are still struggling to achieve an industrial breakthrough despite their good performance, due to insufficient technological maturity.

The advantage of polymers lies in their ease of production, their ability to be manufactured in large quantities at low cost, and their ability to form multi-layer edifices enabling vertical integration. The major problems still to be solved lie in the shaping of these polymers (microstructuring) and the management of interfaces (metal/polymer or solid electrolyte/polymer). Solving these problems will greatly improve the lifetime of these devices, and should lead to a spectacular increase in their use in industry.
