6. Conclusion

The perception of three-dimensional visual space is based on a two-dimensional retinal image. The third dimension is rendered by sources of information generally referred to as "depth cues". These cues can vary according to their sensory modality, visual or motor, but also according to the nature of the visual field, real or represented.

The factors involved in image perception are known as "pictorial cues" and mainly include perspective (linear, chromatic, texture and diffusion), and cognitive information (height in the visual field, size, interposition, etc.).

The hierarchy and effectiveness of these elements vary considerably with the nature of the subject represented. Interior scenes tend to emphasize linear perspective, while outdoor representations tend to play on heights in the visual field.
