1. What are the objectives of energy use in buildings?

The building system is the site of major, ongoing energy transfers. It is important to identify the purposes of these uses at an early stage, in order to better control their impact and guide design choices.

1.1 Ensuring the comfort and health of occupants and users

One of the original aims of housing was to provide protection for its occupants. Today, one of the main purposes of energy use in buildings (particularly housing) is to ensure a comfortable, healthy environment. The notion of thermal comfort is a physiological one, built around several physical quantities linked to the notion of energy. These include :
