Overview

ABSTRACT

The sound knowledge of a site on which civil engineering works are to be constructed is essential. Logging and boring geophysics belong to the various methods of analysis. This article provides an overview of these methods. General information and a presentation of natural radioactivity, resistivity, microseismic, gamma-gamma and neutron-neutron logging are provided. The geophysics of boring is then dealt with. Principles and application domains of seismic and electromagnetic tomographies as well as details on the drilling radar conclude this article.

 INTRODUCTION

Borehole logging and geophysics are part of the panoply of methods used to identify the terrain for civil engineering construction projects. Among geophysical techniques, they are characterized by a particular mode of implementation, since they are used in drilling.

For the general principles of geophysics and the basics of the various methods, we refer to the article "Geophysics applied to civil engineering". Here, however, we reiterate the definitions of borehole geophysics and borehole logging, specifying the circumstances in which they are particularly appropriate.

Note :

the article [C 224] "Geophysics applied to civil engineering" places geophysics in the context of soil investigation methods.
