 INTRODUCTION

Like all metals, aluminum alloys in their liquid state can dissolve gases. However, the only one that dissolves in significant quantities is hydrogen. The others are either not very soluble, or react with aluminum to form stable compounds such as oxides. In other words, hydrogen alone is responsible for the gassing problems sometimes observed in castings. This phenomenon causes defects that adversely affect the mechanical properties of the parts.
