Overview

ABSTRACT

Cast steel production consists of a series of basic metallurgical operations. The combination and sequence of these different processes depend on the melting facilities and the secondary production in which the foundry is located, as well as on the degree of steel purity required. Some operations are therefore systematic, while others are subject to the caster’s judgment. Among the systematic operations, there is load selection, melting, deoxidation, steel grading and various controls such as temperature measurement and chemical-composition determination.

 INTRODUCTION

The production of cast steel can be analyzed as a succession of elementary metallurgical operations, which are described here. The combination and sequence of these different processes depend on the melting and secondary processing equipment available to the foundry, and on the degree of purity of the steel required, as defined by customer order requirements. Some operations are therefore systematic, while others are left to the discretion of the foundryman. Systematic operations include the following:

  • the selection of the load, which depends on the type of furnace used, the return rate and the nature of the steel;

  • the merger ;

  • deoxidation ;

  • the nuance ;

  • and various controls such as temperature measurements or determination of chemical composition.

On the other hand, refining operations such as decarburization or dephosphorization are only carried out in arc furnaces with acid or basic linings, while desulfurization requires an arc furnace equipped with a basic lining or a secondary metallurgy plant. .
