Overview

ABSTRACT

This article deals with the means and techniques used in order to cast massive steel parts. It offers a method in order to determine attack systems composed of refractory potteries commonly used for the casting of massive steel parts. It presents the various standard types, the main filling conditions as well as the parameters required for calculations. It reviews the IT tools available for foundrymen which help in the design of such systems. Examples of calculations and simulation illustrate the subject.

 INTRODUCTION

This dossier deals with the means and techniques used to cast very large steel castings. For a better understanding of what is meant by "very large parts" in steel casting, the reader is referred to Dossier "Steel foundry. Casting of large parts".

This dossier also provides a detailed method for determining etching systems based on the refractory pottery usually used to cast solid steel parts. It covers the different type-systems, the main filling conditions (temperatures, speeds, casting modes, degradation of casting materials, etc.), as well as the parameters required for calculations (notions of staggering, whether or not systems are clogged at the time of casting, principle of adjusting ladle flow to cavity filling systems, evaluation of pressure losses, etc.).

It reviews the software tools available to the foundry to help design these systems. Examples of calculations and simulations illustrate the discussion.
