2. Liquid treatments. Salt baths

With the exception of non-activated baths, treatments in salt baths are always nitrocarburizing treatments resulting in ε-type combination layers and fairly shallow diffusion layers. These treatments are sometimes referred to as "treatments in ionic liquid media", insofar as the reactions take place after decomposition into ions of the compounds present (CNONa → CN - + Na + ).

2.1 Non-activated baths

At nitriding temperatures of 500-550°C, a nitriding reaction can be obtained from the thermal decomposition of an alkaline cyanide (potassium or sodium). The baths are composed of 30-60% sodium cyanide. In this case, the nitriding reaction is very slow, and these baths have...
