1. Metal matrix composites

1.1 Nomenclature

To rationalize the numerous notations used by manufacturers, the ANSI H35.5-1992 standard proposes the following notation, initially used by Aluminium Association:

Alloy / Reinforcement / Volume fraction Form (particles p or fibers f )-Heat treatment.

Example

For example, a composite marked A 356/ SiC/ 20p-T6 has an A 356 aluminum alloy matrix, reinforced with 20% (by volume) silicon carbide particles, and has undergone a T6 treatment.
