6. Metallurgy

The only industrial way to recover rhenium from primary sources is by roasting molybdenite concentrate. Hydrometallurgical processes have remained in the realm of recovery possibilities, but have not progressed beyond the pilot stage.

6.1 Pyrometallurgical route

The molybdenite is roasted to obtain the trioxide MoO 3 following the highly exothermic reaction : MoS2+72O2MoO3+2SO2   213 kcalà 900K
