1.1 Cylinders
The choice of cylinder must meet the following requirements:
sufficient tensile strength to withstand rolling forces;
sufficient surface finish retention;
the greatest possible wear resistance, with the constraint that the cylinder must be able to be re-machined.
In simple terms, steel, which is stronger than cast iron, is used for large trains or high-pressure roughing cages.
The more fragile but wear-resistant cast iron is used for intermediate trains and finishing cages.
