INTRODUCTION
Roll surface finish plays an important role in ensuring product quality. In addition, flute rolling, which imposes complex internal transformations on the product, must be properly managed, calling on the skills of both the rolling mill operator and the sizer.
Surface defects observed on rolled products appear during the rolling process, or are caused either by incorrect setting of the train, or by the ingots themselves. To prevent these defects from being passed on to the wire mill, the billets are inspected and, if necessary, repaired during finishing.
This article describes the stresses placed on cylinders and tooling. It goes on to describe the different types of splines and, finally, explains the defects encountered on products and how to remedy them.
