3. Metallurgical mechanisms in hot rolling

In this section, we describe the different phases of hot rolling and the physical mechanisms involved, after presenting the characteristics of the initial product, whether a slab or a billet.

3.1 Initial product features

We deliberately place ourselves in the case of cold or lukewarm charging (T < Ae 3 , i.e. at a temperature below the equilibrium austenitization temperature). In line with the metallurgical recalls made, the crystallographic structure of the slab or billet before loading is of the centered cubic type. This structure is coarse, given the very low cooling rates typical of continuous casting.
