2. Standards bodies

Motor oils are defined by the classifications and specifications of the following organizations.

  • The European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA) replaced the Committee of Manufacturers of the Common Market (CCMC) in 1991, and issues specifications every two years on average, including laboratory and engine test sequences, for gasoline and diesel engines used in light vehicles (cars and light commercial vehicles) and diesel engines used in industrial vehicles (trucks, buses, public works and agricultural machinery, industrial engines, etc.).

  • Since 1911, the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) in the USA has offered a classification based on the cold and hot viscosities of oils. This classification is used worldwide.
