4. Variation in number of stitches per stitches put on hold

This process is used exclusively for weft knitting, and in particular for production on flat knitting machines.

The principle consists in knitting more stitches with some needles than with others; then some stitches are put on hold. This localized addition of material makes it possible to obtain a variety of shapes. While this principle has long been known in hand knitting for the production of socks, caps, berets, etc., it is much more recent in industrial applications. In fact, as stated in paragraph 1.1
