8. Photoallergy

This is a cutaneous pathological mechanism, following UV exposure, due to photochemical modifications, by UV rays, of substances absorbed locally in the skin or reaching the skin surface via circulating blood. The photo-antigen is then taken up by T lymphocytes as part of a type IV delayed hypersensitivity reaction.

Contact photoallergy is induced by UV-A (320∼400 nm) whatever the maximum absorption spectrum of the photoallergen.

8.1 Induction

The scapular area of albino guinea pigs is free of hair (shorn short). The test substance, undiluted or in a suitable vehicle with an irritant concentration, is applied to the test area. Massage of the treated area ensures penetration of the substance into the skin. Animals in the control group...
