3.1 Tools for improving environmental performance

• The ISO 14000 family of standards deals primarily with environmental management. ISO 14001, which "specifies requirements that enable an organization to achieve expected results" in terms of environmental performance, is a certifiable standard.

• European regulation EMAS No. 1221/2009 is based on ISO 14001, with additional requirements, particularly in terms of external communication and employee involvement. EMAS registration can be obtained after an audit and verification of the environmental declaration.
