2. Why carry out an inventory?
The first objective of a waste inventory is to enable the company to determine its level of compliance with regulatory requirements. Indeed, regulations have become increasingly stringent in recent years:
2.1 Polluter pays principle
The costs of pollution prevention, reduction and control measures must now be borne by the polluter. If a company's waste is the source of environmental pollution, the company may be required to pay pollution clean-up costs. It is therefore in the company's interest to ensure that the waste is disposed of in the correct way, and that it can be traced in the event of an inspection. This traceability can be achieved by keeping a waste register.
