3. What are the reference databases (and documents) for hazard studies?
In the context of hazard studies, CPR 18 E (more commonly known as the Purple Book) is a widely-used source for quantifying ignition probabilities. This is because CPR 18 E has the advantage of compiling both ignition probabilities and loss-of-containment frequencies for pipes and vessels. The same source can therefore be used to access the data needed to quantify the probabilities of hazardous phenomena that may occur following the release of a flammable product into the atmosphere.
The CPR 18 E proposes to quantify immediate ignition based on two criteria: the flow rate and reactivity of the product (see table "Example of immediate ignition probability as a function of product sensitivity") and the probability of delayed ignition using a relatively simple mathematical model.
