5. How do you calculate the effects of a BLEVE?

5.1 The different effects

The "BLEVE sequence" diagram illustrates the six stages of the BLEVE phenomenon, from tank burst to fireball extinction. Three types of effect can be seen in the figure:

  • missile effects (projectiles) linked to the formation of fragments when the reservoir shell ruptures;

  • pressure effects (three peaks associated with reservoir rupture, vaporization of the liquid phase and cloud combustion);

  • thermal effects associated with fireball radiation.
