3. What are the main causes of BLEVE?

3.1 Causes of cold BLEVE

circulaire du 10 mai 2010 mentions that impact or filling attacks can be considered as cold BLEVE initiators. In practice, any initiator likely to cause a loss of containment of the shell of a tank containing a liquefied gas without prior heating can be considered a cause of a cold BLEVE.

The list of initiators includes, but is not limited to, the following:

  • fall from crane ;

  • vehicle impact ;

  • domino effect (overpressure, projectile) ;

  • aircraft crash ;
